Oil & GAS Well Drilling & Fracturing

It is common industry practice to increase the productivity of Oil and Gas wells by cracking open the hydrocarbon bearing zones with hydraulic pressure.

Guar gum and it’s derivatives such as Hydroxypropyl Guar, Carboxymethyl Guar, Carboxymethyl Hydroxypropyl Guar etc. widely used in petroleum industry as additives for aqueous and water / methanol based fracturing fluids. Guar gum based product in aqueous fluids is used in drilling shallow wells. These applications utilize the gum’s properties to increase viscosity, reduce fluid loss and decrease fluid friction.

Properties and Application

Encotech® FR G products can easily crosslink with different cross linking agents include borate and different transition metal ions. Cross linking increases guar gum's resistance to hydrolysis at high temperature, effectively doubling the duration of it's useful viscosity. Up on cross linking the resultant fluid can handle high concentrations of prop pant and provides increased fracture width and penetration. This is the reason why Guar gum is cross linked to thicken fracturing fluids for high temperature oil wells.
In hydraulic fracturing, a liquid is injected under high pressure in to an oil or gas bearing rock formation to create fractures. After the fracture is initiated a popping agent, such as coarse sand, suspended by gelled polymer is carried with the fluid into the fracture to "prop" it open after the pressure is relieved.
Guargum based products are able to reduce the fluid friction during the pumping of aqueous liquids by suspending turbulent flow. The presence of 0.001 % to 0.05 % dissolved guar gum can reduce the friction by 20.00 to 70.00 %. The energy of capital cost savings from lower fluid friction can be substantial, especially where large volumes of liquids are pumped over long distance.

Encotech® FR G polymers are easily depolymerised with either enzymes or oxidizing agent to reduce the viscosity of the fluid. The rate of Viscosity loss is controlled by, (i) Breaker Type and concentration, (ii) Time and (iii) Temperature. The resulting narrow fractures extending away from the well bore increase the production rate of oil and gas wells. The use of guar and it’s derivatives in this applications increased with the oil shortage and the dramatic increase in drilling activity through 1981 and after a low production period, may increase again.
